This website is part of an ongoing EPA-funded project to identify new and better oil dispersants. After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill it was found that the dispersant Corexit, which was used to clean up the aftermath of this spill and many others could be potentially toxic to people and the environment. This is detrimental not only in the context of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, but also when considering the many oil spills that have occurred in the past decade and a half. With society's high dependence upon oil as an energy source, spills are inevitable, but with further research on remediation technologies, it will be possible to minimize their effect upon the delicate ecosystems of the ocean. Many organizations have already begun to research the full effects of the dispersants ecological and human toxicity and to find more sustainable alternatives.
